What is Sleeping Bear Engineering?

Sleeping Bear Engineering is the beginning of a non-profit civil engineering venture. The purpose of Sleeping Bear Engineering is to assist Christian and other non-profit organizations in need of civil engineering and survey services. We are in the process of creating a network of engineering and survey professionals with a heart to serve deserving organizations. The venture's goal will be to provide the services free of the burden of expensive professional fees to those who cannot otherwise afford it. It is not the intent to compete with other professional firms or provide services to profit based organizations or to those who can afford professional services. We will aim to partner with other local firms in areas where assistance will be needed. Current services offered include:

-AutoCAD Land Desktop and Civil Design drafting/design
-Site Plan Developmment
-Stormwater Design
-Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control
-Utility Services – Water and Sewer
-Grading Plans
-Road Design
-Hydrology and Runoff Modeling

-Basic Surveying including topographical surveys

Current Projects:

Our most Recent project is the Zuni Christian Mission and School in Zuni, New Mexico. The Zuni School provides critical high quality education for the sourrounding community. In the early 1970's a fire destroyed the school facilities. From the time of the fire until now, the school has been using portables to educate the students. Thanks to a grant from the VanLoonen foundation, the school has a vision of revitalizing the site including construction of a new school building, teacher apartments, playground, and a new church parsonage. Sleeping Bear will provide site engineering services to the proejct which we anticipate will include the following:

- Topographical Survey (MARCH 28-April 1 2008!!!)
- Parking lot grading plan and layout
- Stormwater Control
- Utility connection design
- Floodplain analysis including modeling existing and proposed
site conditions along the Zuni wash using the United States
Army Corps of Engineering HEC-RAS program.
- Flood Control: Depending on the results of the floodplain
analysis, we will need to prevent flooding of the proposed site
improvements.

In the end, we will be able to provide full construction plans for construction of the proposed site. Thank you to Fleis & Vandenbrink Engineeirng for allowing us to use survey equipment for the upcoming topo!
